Day 6 Wed May 14 Slovenian Highlights tour


 

Slovenia is a cheaper version of Switzerland. Melania Trump is the most famous Slovenian. Known for good beer resulting from from the mountain Springs water. It was still unusually cold so we bundled up and enjoyed the cold. 
 

  
 

Our Boat was named Erissa and our captain manned the oars in the back of the boat to take us across the lake to the castle. 
We  went up 99 steps to the bell tower to ring the bell and make a wish as grooms did long ago. The only difference was we didn’t have to carry a bride! Thank goodness!

We had lunch on the lake with a beautiful view. Then we were off to the center of town.  Top castle 800 yrs old. At one bridge there were statues of Dragons. Some stories say they symbolized Good over evil as in St George and the Dragon. Another story was that it was that the dragons looked like angry females, calling it the mother in laws bridge . The 16 year reigning Mayor was a good businessman and did many improvements like  buildubg a 7 story parking lot under the street and making the  center of town a pedestrian area with no cars. We rode the cable car up to the top had dinner. Venice Italy had a strong influence on the remodeling of the city. 


 


Slon means elephant. As the story goes, an elephant pooped at the site of the hotel so they named the Slon Hotel.  Boat ride.  Off to the center of town.  Top castle 800 yrs old. Rainy and cold tomorrow in the cave tomorrow. 8:15 tomorrow. Dragon Christian. Day 3 Sunday, May 10 A Hard Day’s Ride

After breakfast we loaded on a bus to drive to Serbia exploring the sights of Vojvodina, a province in the north of Serbia. At around 11 We arrived at  Zvonko Bogdan Winery and sample three distinctive wines from the Palić vineyard.  At the winery was a beautiful National Cash Register from Dayton Ohio, near where I used to live long, ago. The winery was amazing. Our guide gave a wonderful tour with perfect english. We enjoyed a delicious ham and snacks along with the wine tasting of both white and red wines. I was introduced to Glass corks that I had never seen before.They are used in their more expensive white wine bottles that popped off like champagne corks! A concrete egg was a new acquisition for the winery used for storing white wine.  This winery uses the barrels twice and then sells them to wineries that carry cheaper wines. Day 1 Friday May 8

Before we left home, our refrigerator died. Luckily we had time to empty all the food into another fridge and freezer. We made it to Budapest without a hitch. The plane flight was wonderful as we are flying business class. We looked forward to a restful night of sleep at our first hotel, but neither of us slept a wink. After tossing and turning all night we had a nice breakfast at the hotel and will roam around Budapest for the day.  An appetizer of smoked salmon on the plane. The food was delish. The Hop on Hop off bus was a great way to see the parliament and St Michael’s Cathedral, which, by law, must be the same size. Some folks think it’s a symbol of the balance between the Church and the State. We also got to know Budapest’s many bridges, like the Liberty Bridge, the Elisabeth Bridge, and the Chain Bridge. We mixed that with a nap and a sauna, enjoyed a wonderful Lebanese dinner, and went to bed early. The Parliament The green Liberty Bridge St.Michael’s Basilica

Day 2 May 9. More sites of Budapest

  Today, we had the pleasure of meeting our guide, Dragon, and the rest of our group. There are about 12 couples in total. We went by bus to the highest place in Budapest, Centadella, and enjoyed the views there. Dragon brought an older man to give us more in-depth info on the area. The only problem is that his accent was impossible to understand. Right after Dragon told us to stay together and not get lost we notice he wasn’t with us but had gotten separated from us with another woman of the group! We finally found our guide but I was seeing the beginnings of a Saturday Night Live sketch with the unfolding events. Matthias church, also known  as the Coronation Church and 3 other names was truly amazing. We could see that all the restoration of these 13th, 16th century buildings must be an enormous expense. Everything was beautiful.
